How to Clean Dyson Vacuum Heads
Step One
Unplug your vacuum and remove the head from the main body.
This may seem obvious but It is always important to unplug your vacuum cleaner before you start to clean it, this can help prevent any accidents or unwanted entanglements.
You’ll need to remove the head from the main body of the vacuum to reach any clogged areas.
Step Two
Undo the end cap of the vacuum head. This is the plastic plate on the side of the vacuum head keeping the brush roller in place.
You can use either a coin or a flathead screwdriver to do this, it’s very simple. The screw should turn anti-clockwise however this could be dependent on your model.
Step Three
Remove the brush bar. It is important to remove the brush bar from the casing in order to clean it properly.
Once you’ve undone the end cap, the brush should simply slide out.
Step Four
Cut out the hair and debris. When we think of cleaning our vacuum head, this is the step most of us will instantly go to.
Hair is one of the main things that can clog up the vacuum head and majorly reduce the efficiency of your vacuum.
There is actually more to cleaning the head than this, but removing the hair and debris caught around the brush bar is an important step.
To do this use a pair of scissors or a knife to cut through anything entangled.
Step Five
Unclog the brush bar housing. The plastic casing that the roller lives in can easily get clogged up with dust and dirt that gets trapped instead of being sucked up into the main dust canister.
You can do this with a damp micro-fibre cloth or any dusting material really as long as the surfaces are dry when you put it back together again.
In some models, there is a shelf component near the neck of the vacuum head.
If you have one of these then it is important to clean this as dust can build up, compressing over time causing the vacuum to stop working.
This may be hard to reach as the gap is fairly small (dependent on the model) so you can either use a small brush or an L-shaped wire to get into this small area.
If possible we would recommend trying to clean this area with a damp micro-fibre cloth too and leave it to dry.
Step Six
Unclog the neck of the vacuum head. The neck is the part of the vacuum head that allows you to disconnect the head in order to use other cleaning attachments.
If you are familiar with this, you will know that it is prone to get clogged with lumps of hair the vacuum has tried to clean up.
Sometimes larger objects like small plastic children’s toys can get stuck here without us noticing, so be sure to check this regularly.
You may be able to do this by hand, if not use a wire such as a metal coat hanger to reach inside and pull out any lumps of dust and debris.
Cleaner The Vacuum, The More Power You Have
Over time dust and dirt builds up in your vacuum head which can lead to it performing less efficiently, if left too long it can cause your vacuum to stop working altogether.
