If you’ve already purchased a Dyson vacuum, you’ll already be aware that it’s no cheap investment.

That is why it is so important to ensure that when you’re emptying your Dyson, that you’re doing it correctly, as this will boost its life by a good few years.

Not only this but the very last thing you’ll want to do is tip everything you’ve just sucked up onto your clean freshly vacuumed floor.

This is the kind of thing that’ll tip you right over the edge on a bad day. And unfortunately, bagless vacuums kind of have a reputation for being notoriously messy anyway, so you’ll need to be really careful emptying them.

Luckily for you, you’ll learn absolutely everything you’ll need to know in this article.

How To Empty A Dyson Vacuum

Before we start, it’s important to mention that there are many, many, different variations of Dyson vacuums, and each one’s process will be slightly different from another since the dust cup and button positions will vary.

Throughout this article, I’ll go over some of the most popular Dyson vacuums but it would be impossible for me to list them all.

But don’t panic, if you can’t see your model you may still be able to follow the instructions, while the layout may deviate from what’s being described the process tends to be fairly similar.

What’s Required

You’ll need to make sure you’ve got a couple of things before you start, but don’t worry it isn’t much!

– A dry towel

– A small toothbrush (or something similar)

– Dysons combination tool (if available)

1. To empty this type of vacuum you’ll need to detach the dust cup. On the top of the dust cup, you should be able to see a button. Press this and it should pop straight out.

2. Make sure that you have a hold of the top of the cup and move it to the trash can.

3. Ensure that the bottom of the cup is hovering over the trash can, you want this to be as low as it can be in the trash can so that the dust doesn’t spill or kick up.

4. Press the same button as before to open the bottom of the cup and release the contents.

5. Gently tap or shake the cup to release any of the dirt that is being stubborn.

6. Close the lid at the bottom of the cup. It will click once it has locked.

7. Place the cup back into the vacuum. When you have done this you should hear a click. Once back in place, it shouldn’t be able to move if you shake or pull it.

Dyson V-Series Vacuum

Dyson V8 Animal Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner

Dyson V-series vacuum cleaners are the most common type of Dyson vacuum that people tend to own. But it’s worth noting that the style of the vacuum cleaner changed drastically from the V10 series onwards.

This is why I have broken the v-series cleaners into two categories as the way you’ll empty them both will be quite different from one another.

V6-V8

1. Ensure that the Dyson has been completely shut down. Turn it off at the power switch and unplug the cord from the outlet

2. Locate the red button that is close to the handle of the vacuum behind the cup. Do not press this button until the vacuum is already over the trash can as this will open the bottom of the cup and release the dirt.

3. If you wish to completely release the dust cup to clean it, just press the red button once more and it will come off.

4. To clean the dust cup you can choose to either wash it or wipe it with a cloth. Once done close the bottom lid and place it back in the vacuum.

V10-V15

1. Make sure the vacuum is completely off, both on the vacuum and at the outlet. And then remove the front of the suction wand. There should be a release button on the wand, press this and pull and it should come away.

2. Once the wand is off, you should be able to locate the release door for the dust cup.

3. While holding onto the handle, guide the vacuum over the trash can making sure that the cup is over the trash can. Or you can turn the vacuum upside down and angle the front portion towards the trash can

4. Beneath the dust cup, you should find a red latch. Pull this to open the bottom lid and release the dirt.

5. To remove the cup completely for cleaning, you’ll need to locate a small button at the front that has a small white arrow on it. Press this button and it should slide straight out.

6. Reverse the process to reinstall.

Tips And Tricks

Here are a few last pieces of advice to maintain your Dyson.

Empty Your Dyson Daily – Get into the habit of emptying your vacuum after each use as this helps it to run optimally.

Never Overfill Your Dyson – Overfilling your Dyson past the fill line (which is about ¾ of the cup) can cause the performance to drop significantly

Check The Temperature Of The Cup – If you tend to find that your dust cup is hot to touch, it’s likely that the Dyson is overheating. Leave it for around 30 minutes and empty the contents of the cup before starting to vacuum again.

Final Thoughts

Hopefully, now you have a better understanding of how to correctly empty your Dyson vacuum cleaner.

It usually isn’t that difficult to do, just always be sure that the bottom lid of the dust cup is always above the trash can before you press any release buttons!

If it’s not securely inside the trash can, you’ll end up having to get the vacuum out again to clear it up to empty the cup again – and I think we can all agree that we have neither the patience nor time for something like that.
